10th Grade Reading

I need some advice.  I’m going to be teaching Advanced Sophomore English next year and we are looking to add a novel to the curriculum.  We want something challenging but readable.  I’ve been tossing ideas around, but nothing is really jumping out at me right now.  What is taught in your schools?  Any suggestions?

I’ve commented (incoherently) before, but I remember our 10th grade class readings went well. The Kite Runner, Othello, and The Odyssey were three of the best units.

    Okay, so Othello isn’t a novel…

For me, The Odyssey is a 9th grade unit, so that’s out. We cover Taming of the Shrew and/or Julius Caesar for Shakespeare. Kite Runner was ruled out (I haven’t read it) because of a rape scene. I don’t know if it’s particularly graphic, or if the other teachers are really sensitive.

We ended up adding Brave New World, Their Eyes are Watching God, and Frankenstein. I’m fairly excited about two of the choices…can you guess which ones?
